The Atlantic Book Awards Society is pleased to announce the full shortlist for the ten different book prizes comprising the 2014 Atlantic Book Awards. The twenty-seven books up for awards represent the wide range of literary works being produced in Atlantic Canada—from cutting edge fiction to deeply researched books on Atlantic Canadian history, illustrated children’s picture books to novels written for teens and young adults.
Among the more familiar names on the shortlist are CBC media personality Stephanie Domet for her second novel, Fallsy Downsies (Invisible Publishing); mystery novelist, Anne Emery for Blood on a Saint (ECW Press); and illustrator Susan Tooke for Lasso the Wind: Aurélia’s Verses and Other Poems (Nimbus Publishing). Ruth Holmes Whitehead’s is short-listed for three awards for her work, Black Loyalists: Southern Settlers of Nova Scotia’s First Free Black Community and Acorn Press’s Ni’n na L’Nu: The Mi’kmaq of Prince Edward Island received two nominations.
The region’s book publishers are well represented on the shortlist with 20 of the 30 awards going to books by Atlantic publishers. Halifax’s Nimbus Publishing leads, having published six of the shortlisted titles, while Prince Edward Island’s Acorn Press has five nominations, and Formac Publishing, Goose Lane Editions and Roseway Publishing with two nominated titles each.
The Atlantic Book Awards Society announced the nominees last evening at a fundraising event that featured author Stephen Kimber hosting a conversation with fellow writers Anne Emery, Jon Tattrie and Stephen Laffoley.
The 2014 Atlantic Book Awards and Festival runs May 14-21 with free literary events. Winners of the 2014 Atlantic Book Awards will be announced at a special awards show on the last night of the week-long festival, Wednesday, May 21 at 7:00 p.m. at the Delta Prince Edward/PEI Convention Centre in Charlottetown, PEI as part of the planned PEI 2014 celebrations.
The Board of the non-profit Atlantic Book Awards Society is made up of representatives of the Atlantic Canadian book and writing community. The 2014 Atlantic Book Awards and Festival gratefully acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Canada Book Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage, and the sponsorship of the Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association/Atlantic Books Today, University of Prince Edward Island, City of Charlottetown and the Province of Prince Edward Island.

Students may submit work in any of the many subgenres of creative non-fiction: memoir or autobiography, essay, literary journalism, or profiles of people or places. Submissions may be “conventional” or “experimental” and may represent any creative non-fiction tradition. However, the best work will demonstrate compelling literary merit. Open to high school and college levels. Submissions not falling within the guidelines outlined below will not be considered. Late entries will not be accepted. Only one entry per student.
High School Creative Non-Fiction Writing Award Competition is open to students currently enrolled in a high school accredited by the US. Students may submit one or more pieces of writing as one file, maximum 10 single-spaced pages, endorsed by a teacher and released by a parent or guardian. Forget Me Not Writing Contest
All writers are invited to submit stories of no more than 1,800 words, or poems of no more than 72 lines, to the “Forget Me Not Writing Contest”. The objective of the contest is to increase awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia, as well as raise funds for the Alzheimer Society of Sarnia-Lambton.
The story or poem must begin with the words: “Remember when” and are intended to be a celebration of the gift of memory and do not have to be about Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia; fiction or non fiction.

Trio House Press Book Awards: November 1-April 30
Trio House Press gives two awards annually: the Trio Award for First or Second Book for emerging poets, and the Louise Bogan Award for Artistic Merit and Excellence for a book of poems contributing in an innovative and distinct way to American poetry.
The Trio Award for First or Second Book includes $1,000, publication, and twenty books. The Trio Award for First or Second Book is only open to poets with less than two books published.
The Louise Bogan Award for Artistic Merit and Excellence includes $1,000, publication, and twenty books. The Louise Bogan Award for Artistic Merit and Excellence is open to ALL poets, regardless of publication history.
Each award winner receives $1000 and twenty copies of his or her book. Additionally, each winner must serve as a Collective Member of Trio House Press for twenty-four months after publication in order to assist with the press and bringing more Trio books into print.

2014 BRISTOL SHORT STORY PRIZE

3. The maximum length of submissions is 4,000 words (does not include title), there is no minimum length. Stories can be on any theme or subject and are welcome in any style including graphic, verse or genre-based (Crime, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Historical, Romance, Children’s etc.).
4. Entries can be made online or by post. There is no geographical restriction on entry- the Bristol Short Story Prize is open to everyone, whether they are based in the UK or outside the UK. The Society for Humanistic Anthropology announces our annual fiction competition to encourage anthropologists to use alternative literary genres to explore anthropological concerns associated with the four fields of anthropology. Stories should not exceed 20 pages typed double-spaced. There is a limit of one story per submission.

The Society for Humanistic Anthropology (SHA) announces the 24th annual juried competition for the Victor Turner Prize in Ethnographic Writing. The late Victor Turner devoted his career to seeking a language that would reopen anthropology to the human subject, and the prize will be given in recognition of an innovative book that furthers this project.
Eligible genres include ethnographic monographs, narratives, historical accounts, biographies, memoirs, dramas, or single-authored collections of essays, short stories, or poems. A $500 first-place, a $300 second place and $200 third-place prizes, for books published between April 2012 and April 2014, will be awarded at the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association in Washington DC in December 2014.
Books may be entered into the competition by authors, book editors, or colleagues. No formal letter of nomination is needed. Books published in 2012-2013 and entered in last year’s competition may be resubmitted this year with the appropriate entry fee.
Submission fee: For authors who are already SHA members, the entry fee is $25/book. For authors who are not SHA members, the entry fee is $75/book. (Publishers: for all books you submit, please check with the author first to discover whether s/he is a current SHA member and please encourage authors to join SHA).

Crucible: Poetry and Fiction Competition
The Crucible poetry and fiction competition is open to all writers. All entries must be completely original, must never have been published, must be in manuscript form, and must not be involved in other competitions. The author’s name should not appear on the manuscript copy. Writers should send with their entries a short biographical sketch. Permission to publish the material is implied by submission. Burt Awards for First Nations and Métis Literature
The Burt Award for First Nations, Métis and Inuit Literature is a unique literary award and readership initiative established by CODE with the generous support of philanthropist William Burt and the Literary Prizes Foundation that recognizes excellence in First Nations, Métis and Inuit literature for youth and provide engaging and culturally-relevant books for young people across Canada.
In partnership with the Assembly of First Nations, the Métis National Council, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, the National Association of Friendship Centres, the Association of Canadian Publishers, the Canada Council for the Arts, Frontier College and GoodMinds, the Award will be given annually to three English-language literary works for young adults (aged 12 through 18) by First Nations, Métis or Inuit authors or translators (if applicable). The Canada Council for the Arts will be responsible for establishing the selection criteria and administering the jury process.
A First Prize of $12,000, a Second Prize of $8,000 and a Third Prize of $5,000 will be awarded to the authors and translators (if applicable) of the winning titles. Winning publishers will participate in a guaranteed book purchase and distribution program in which CODE commits to purchasing a minimum of 2500 copies of each title at a bulk discount for distribution to schools, libraries, and Friendship Centres that serve First Nations, Métis and Inuit youth across Canada.
Publishers operating in Canada can submit English works of prose fiction or non-fiction written by First Nations, Métis or Inuit authors. Published books and unpublished manuscripts are eligible.

The Idaho Prize is an annual, national competition offering $1,000 plus publication by Lost Horse Press for a book-length poetry manuscript. The Fiction Desk Ghost Story Competition
The 2014 edition of our ghost story competition is now open!
Most of the stories we publish at The Fiction Desk are more or less realistic, but we try to stray outside that from time to time: some genre fiction should be part of any balanced reading diet. One genre that we particularly like to feature is the ghost story.

Jerry Jazz Musician Fiction Contest
Three times a year, Jerry Jazz Musician awards a writer who submits, in our opinion, the best original, previously unpublished work of approximately one – five thousand words. The winner will be announced via a special mailing of our Jerry Jazz Musician newsletter. Publishers, artists, musicians and interested readers are among those who subscribe to the newsletter. Additionally, the work will be published on the home page of Jerry Jazz Musician and featured there for at least four weeks.
The Jerry Jazz Musician reader has interests in music, social history, literature, politics, art, film and theatre, particularly that of the counter-culture of mid-twentieth century America. While your writing should appeal to a reader with these characteristics, all story themes are considered.

In addition to the story being published on Jerry Jazz Musician, the author’s acceptance of the prize money gives Jerry Jazz Musician the right to include the story in an anthology that could appear in book or magazine form. A development fund partnership with Corus’ Western Canada pay TV service, Movie Central and the Winnipeg-based NSI, the third year of Script to Screen was announced at theToronto Screenwriting Conferencethis past weekend. Submissions will open during this year’s Banff Media Festivalin June.

The Saturday Evening Post 2015 Great American Fiction Contest is underway!
In its nearly three centuries of existence, The Saturday Evening Post has published short fiction by a who’s who of American authors including F. Scott Fitzgerald; William Faulkner; Anne Tyler; Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.; Ray Bradbury; Louis L’Amour; Sinclair Lewis; Jack London; and Edgar Allan Poe. You have the opportunity to join our illustrious line-up by entering The Saturday Evening Post’s Third Annual Great American Fiction Contest.
The winning story will be published in the Jan/Feb 2015 edition of The Saturday Evening Post, and the author will receive a $500 payment. Five runners-up will each receive a $100 cash payment and will also have their stories published online.
Submission Guidelines
Stories must be between 1,500 and 5,000 words in length
All stories must be submitted by the author, and previously unpublished (excluding personal websites and blogs)
No extreme profanity or graphic sex scenes
All stories must be submitted online in Microsoft Word format with the author’s name, address, telephone number, and email address on the first page.
Entries should be character or plot-driven pieces in any genre of fiction.

New Writers Award
The New Writers Award is sponsored by the thirteen members of the Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA) to recognize newly published writers and introduce the best among them to students and faculty on GLCA campuses. Judges are professors of literature and writers in residence at GLCA colleges.
Since 1970, an award is made each year for a first published volume of poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction. Each award winner has the opportunity to tour the thirteen colleges giving readings, meeting students and faculty, and leading discussions or classes.
Nominations should come from the publisher and should emphasize literary excellence. Publishers interested in finding out more about this award can contact Gregory Wegner, Director of the New Writers Award, via email or at 734.661.2350.
Note that the award is for a first published volume in its genre by the writer, that each publisher may enter only one work in each genre, and that four copies of each entry must be submitted. Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction

Prize Guidelines
A prize of $60,000 will be awarded to a literary nonfiction book published between October 1, 2013 and September 17, 2014 that, in the opinion of the jurors, is the year’s best book of nonfiction. Literary nonfiction includes, among other forms, works of personal or journalistic essays, memoirs, commentary, criticism both social and political, history, and biography. Finalist works will demonstrate a distinctive voice, as well as a persuasive and compelling command of tone, narrative, style, and technique. The overall effect of such writing should provide the general reader with an informed, unique perspective on the issue at hand. The jurors will shortlist between three and five titles. Prizes of $5,000 will be awarded to each of the finalists.
Eligibility Criteria
Titles must be published in Canada between October 1, 2013 and September 17, 2014. Books that are not yet in final published form by the final deadline of July 30, 2014 may be submitted as bound galleys.
Books must be English-language, first-edition trade books published by a Canadian press, written by Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Previous publication in another country does not disqualify a book.

Darker Times Fiction
We currently run three monthly competitions for UK and international writers, all on the theme of “Darker Times.” You can take this as straight up horror, or you can interpret it in any creative way you wish. Neil Postman Award for Metaphor

Although primarily known as an educationist and a media critic, Neil Postman was, at his core, a “noticer”—and he particularly noticed what we do with metaphor and how metaphor shapes and creates our cognitive world. Postman maintained that words (and words, in truth, are metaphors) are as much the driver of reality as they are the vehicle. Consequently, metaphor was not a subject to be relegated and limited to high school poetry units wherein a teacher drones on about the difference between “like” and “as” and considers the job finished. For Postman, the study of metaphor was unending and metaphors were as crucial as they were omnipresent; they served to give form to and dictate experience.
In honor and remembrance of Neil Postman, who died on October 5, 2003, we have established the Neil Postman Award for Metaphor. The motivation for the award is simple and two-fold: To reward a given writer for his or her use of metaphor, and to celebrate (and hopefully propagate) Postman’s work and the typographical mind.
Each spring the editors will choose one poem from all of the submissions received by Rattle during the previous year. The author of the chosen poem will receive $500. The Creative Nonfiction Collective Society’s annual conference will be held May 2-4, 2014 at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel in Calgary. The 10th anniversary conference promises a weekend jam-packed with literary nonfiction. Apply now for NSI Totally Television
The National Screen Institute is seeking applications from writer/producer teams for its prestigious NSI Totally Television course.
Up to six teams will have the opportunity to develop their television projects with the best showrunners/story editors in the country.
Past story editors have included Tassie Cameron (Rookie Blue), Vera Santa Maria (producer on Parks and Recreation), David Barlow (King, The Border) and Aaron Martin (Being Erica, Saving Hope). Teams will also meet with decision makers from major Canadian networks and executive producers from companies like Shaftesbury, Temple Street, Breakthrough and Omni.
This 10-month course includes extensive training, individual sessions with story editors and production execs, and private pitch meetings with broadcasters. Teams advancing to phase two of the course attend the Banff World Media Festival and receive up to $5,000.
“We’re so happy to bring this in-demand course back to NSI’s regular roster of programming,” said Melissa Kajpust, director of programming at NSI. “It’s an exciting time for Canadian television and we’re grateful to Bell Media for extending their support of NSI Totally Television.”

The Indigenous Writing Program is a unique opportunity for writers to develop their writing and storytelling voices amidst a vibrant community of renowned faculty and fellow writers. Writers receive invaluable one-on-one editorial feedback with outstanding faculty during the residency, and continue working online with a mentor-editor throughout the 10 weeks off campus.

Apply now for NSI Totally Television
The National Screen Institute is seeking applications from writer/producer teams for its prestigious NSI Totally Television course.
Up to six teams will have the opportunity to develop their television projects with the best showrunners/story editors in the country.
Past story editors have included Tassie Cameron (Rookie Blue), Vera Santa Maria (producer on Parks and Recreation), David Barlow (King, The Border) and Aaron Martin (Being Erica, Saving Hope). Teams will also meet with decision makers from major Canadian networks and executive producers from companies like Shaftesbury, Temple Street, Breakthrough and Omni.
This 10-month course includes extensive training, individual sessions with story editors and production execs, and private pitch meetings with broadcasters. Teams advancing to phase two of the course attend the Banff World Media Festival and receive up to $5,000.

Swim in its crystal clear waters or hike old donkey paths kept open for nature lovers. Gladstone Library Writer in Residence Programme for 2015: OPEN NOW!

Gladstone’s Library’s immensely successful Writer in Residence programme is now seeking submissions for residencies to take place in 2015. There will be four residencies offered in 2015. Each of the winning writers will be awarded a full month’s residency in the wonderfully creative atmosphere of Gladstone’s Library. During that month, each writer will publish two blogs about their stay, run a one-day workshop on the craft of creative writing, and host an evening event where they talk about any aspect of their writing life. Each residency comes with full board and lodging, travel expenses within the UK and a stipend of £100 per week. Previous judges of the prize include Damian Barr, Stella Duffy, and Jessica Fellowes. The 2015 judges are Vanessa Gebbie, Charles Gladstone, Katrina Naomi and Sarah Waters.
Now in its fourth year, the prize was established by Gladstone’s Library in association with Damian Barr (saloniere and author of Maggie and Me) to explore and define liberal values in the twenty-first century. As the Library’s Warden, Peter Francis, points out, ‘we are committed to maintaining Gladstone’s legacy of engagement with social, moral, and spiritual questions, by helping people reflect more deeply on the questions that concern them: this scheme is an extension of that mission’.

Three residencies are offered per year, in the spring, summer and fall. Up to four artists and a curator or a writer may participate in each residence, eight weeks for the artists, four weeks for the curator or the writer. Curators and writers receive a $572 stipend and free lodging for the four-week period of the residence. A $260 writer’s fee will also be paid for texts on the residency produced for publication by Est-Nord-Est (250 words per artist). Curators and writers have access to an individual studio space, documentation on the artists, certain electronic equipment, logistical support… and a bicycle. Location Quebec.

ISLAND Hill House Artist Residency Program
Hill House Residency supports talented emerging songwriters, writers at all stages of their career and non-studio artists (see a more complete definition below) with a two, three or four week stay in a semi-secluded log cabin near East Jordan, Michigan. It includes a well-stocked kitchen, a selection of instruments and some basic recording gear, as well as opportunities for community exchange through performance, readings and workshops (only at your request, of course). The emerging musician residency also offers a small stipend to aid in your professional development.
Artists age 21 and older from anywhere in the world may apply. Solo artists as well as collaborating teams of up to four people may apply.
The residency lasts a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of four weeks.
There is a $25 application fee. This fee is per application period. Applying for an entire year will cost $50. While there is no additional cost to you, you will still need money for incidentals, materials and transportation to and from the residency. Also consider indirect costs: time away from your job and paying bills at home while you are in residence.

Osage Arts Community Residency
Osage Arts Community is a place that provides temporary time, space, and support for the creation of new work in a retreat format. These creative residencies are generally anywhere from one week to one year but average around six months. OAC serves creative people of all kinds – visual artists, composers, poets, fiction and nonfiction writers.
OAC is located on a 152-acre farm in an isolated rural mountainside setting in Central Missouri bordered by ¾ of a mile of the Gasconade River. We provide a solitary retreat to those working alone, as well as welcoming collaborative teams, offering a living space and a country environment in addition to workspace to emerging and mid-career artists.

Red Gate Residency
Red Gate Residency was founded in 2001, by the leading art gallery in China and has since been committed to the promotion of multicultural art dialogue within an immersion setting. Each year, they host over 70 artists from all over the world in the residency. In order to provide artists-in-residence with abundant opportunities to explore the local art scene, they also cooperate with art spaces and projects in Beijing and coordinate exhibitions and activities.
Eligible Applicants
There is no limitation by medium nor by nationality. We are open to multicultural and cross-disiplinary exchange. We work with artists who can organize their own funds and or have received grants to cover their residency.
Application Process
We ask that all applicants apply using our online application form. Portfolio and brief bigography are required. Applicants also need to outline their residency objectives. The length of residencies range from 1 month to 6 months (we prefer to take bookings by the month). Applications are received on a rolling basis. Although at times we may have last minute space available, our facilities commonly fill six months in advance so we encourage an early application.

FanStory.com is a writing site founded in 2000.
On this writing community all posts receive feedback from writers and readers. Feedback includes a detailed comment on the posted work and a rating. The site uses a six star ratings scale with “1” being the worst and “6” being the best.
Writers are ranked based on the feedback they receive. Separate rankings are available for Poets, Novelists, Short Works (short stories and essays) and Script Writers (television and other forms of screenplays). Trophies are rewarded to the top five writers in each of the individual rankings at the end of the year.
The site recognizes writing with “Recognized”, “All Time Best” and “Seal of Quality” levels. Each level is more difficult to receive with the final level determined by the Seal of Quality committee. The committee is made up of published authors and stand-out reviewers. They offer feedback to help writers get published.
The site features free writing contests with cash prizes. Site members also have the ability to create their own contests to challenge other writers to write about a specific topic or a specific form of writing (such as writing using specific poetry format).

Public Engagement in the Arts
The Canada Council is launching a dialogue about how the arts bring value to the lives of Canadians and we invite you to join the conversation. Read the discussion paper, Public Engagement in the Arts, on current thinking and practices in public engagement or check out Simon Brault’s blog post on ways Canadians can have rich artistic experiences. Then share your thoughts on how to become actively engaged in the arts. Tell us what public engagement in the arts means to you by posting comments on the blog, on our Facebook page or on Twitter at hashtag #artsandpublic. In its 2011-16 Strategic Plan, the Council identified public engagement in the arts as a strategic theme that infuses all of its work. We hope to broaden and enhance the public conversation about this topic and use this discussion to inform the development of future Council activities.
